The Battle of Lexington and Concord: 19 April 1775

This was the first clash between American colonists and British troops and were widely reported from a variety of points of view which bear little resemblance to each other. Three different account are given here:

• an open letter from the Massachusetts provincial congress to the inhabitants of Great Britain, which paint a dark picture of the actions of the British troops
• a letter from Ann Hulton to her friend Mrs Lightbody of Bristol. Ann Hulton was the sister of one of the customs' commissioners. She presents the American colonists' actions in a very unpleasant light.
